Commentary
This work has four movements.
The first is a slow movement where an unstable melodic curve is heard as the main voice.
This melodic curve is created with different instruments: first we hear it played by the solo clarinet, then by small groups of strings, then again by the clarinet …
Instruments that do not play the lead voice will serve to create timbre interferences and add colour to it.
The second movement is fast. It begins with a cadence played by the solo clarinet, which is imitated by the string orchestra. The movement ends with the solo clarinet and string orchestra alternating with each other.
The third movement is slow. As in the first, here the idea of a slow and unstable melody reappears. However, this time the texture is denser, there are many voices, both main and secondary voices, that create an overlap of sound planes.
Finally, the fourth and last movement is fast. As if it were a “coda” (final passage), we can hear elements of the three previous movements combined: fast cells that recall the second movement, as well as slower lines, as in the first and third movements.
The title of the work means “The wishes of the wind” and refers to the solo instrument, the clarinet.
